Chew on This
Ready to take a stand against smokeless tobacco? Set aside a few hours the week of Feb. 17-24 to celebrate Through With Chew Week by completing the following activity and helping other teens discover the truth about smokeless tobacco.
Through With Chew Week is a great time to educate others and focus on the deadly effects of chewing tobacco. You probably already know that smokeless tobacco contains 28 cancer-causing chemicals, but do your friends, classmates or athletes at your school know? Or how about the fact that smokeless tobacco use creates nicotine dependence and increases the risk of throat, mouth and other cancers?
It's up to you to spread the real deal; smokeless tobacco is not a safe alternative to cigarettes.
To complete this activity, pick up a few packs of gum - the five sticks packs will work perfectly - download this sticker template and tape or glue it to gum packs. Or, if you feel creative, design your own template containing a fact about smokeless tobacco and a way for the lucky recipient to find out more (e.g., include the Web address for www.standonline.org or www.debunkify.com). Include a catchy slogan like "Chew On This" and the stand and DEBUNKIFY logo to snag their interest.
Now, decide who you want to target with your gum packs and take your message to the streets! Try to find a place or event with a higher rate of smokeless tobacco use. For example, you may know student athletes or another group that uses smokeless tobacco more than others. Brainstorm people or groups that you know use smokeless tobacco; these will be great people to target-this information may just save their life. You can even take your gum packs to the next hockey or basketball game or any other popular locations for smokeless tobacco users and talk to them about the mouth lesions and throat soars of oral cancer caused by smokeless tobacco. Smokeless tobacco can mess with their game even if they're not inhaling a lung full of smoke.
