project SUSO

PROJECT SUSO was a three month-long activism challenge contest that took place from September to November of 2005. Each session of the contest focused on one of stand's main initiatives; glamorization of tobacco in movies and on TV, tobacco-free schools and clean indoor air. Each month, participating stand Teams received a list of challenges to complete for points. The challenges were wild, ranging from dying teammates hair orange to writing letters to the editor about secondhand smoke to holding an "orange day" at school to giving Ohio Tobacco QUIT LINE information to loved ones who smoke. There were three unique winners of each session, winning personalized Team track jackets. The grand prize winner, Perry County, had the choice between an activism trip to Washington, D.C., an activism trip to NYC or a "media mania" package. In the end, the Team members chose the NYC trip, where they met with executives at MTV, participated in a press conference with New York's youth anti-tobacco movement and even joined the audience outside of Good Morning America holding tons of stand signage! In all, 35 stand Teams competed in the contest, winning a total of 227,042 points and recruiting over 562 new teens! Check out the blog, winner's video and more!
